Assemblyman Houghtaling Demonstrates Support of Community Based Care and Supportive Housing Programs for Disabled Adults and Veterans at a Triple C Housing, Inc. Visit; Discusses Sandy Recovery and Resiliency

Point Pleasant, NJ- Assemblyman Eric Houghtaling raised support and awareness about community based supportive housing opportunities for disabled adults and veterans as he toured Triple C Housing, Inc. on Tuesday, October 25th. Houghtaling met with tenants at the multifamily residence to gain a better understanding of the positive impact and cost effectiveness of supportive housing programs for individuals with disabilities and veterans seeking housing stability.

Triple C Housing, Inc. is a non-profit organization that provides affordable, supportive housing to individuals diagnosed with a disability, and veterans, who may be homeless or at risk, in addition to individuals and families impacted by Superstorm Sandy.  The goal of Triple C is to enlist public and private sectors support in developing safe, decent and affordable housing for individuals with the greatest need so they may live independently with dignity in their communities.

The tour featured the success story of Amy, who once lived at the Seashell multifamily residence after being discharged from a state psychiatric hospital.  Through the supportive housing program, she was able to focus on regaining meaning in her life and getting back to work.  She regained her independence with wrap around support services provided by staff, eventually moving on into another apartment on her own.  She recounted her journey toward full independence and highlighted her many achievements.

Houghtaling also toured the residence, and learned of the how the tenants and organization faced Superstorm Sandy and managed the process of long term recovery.  While the tenants were relocated, Triple C Housing undertook the renovations while also engaging tenants in learning about resiliency.  Recovery efforts focused on tenant engagement and education for emergency preparedness, and providing residents with “go bags” stocked with essentials to manage emergencies.  Triple C Housing also cultivated a raised garden bed (post Sandy) to provide for fresh vegetables and herbs to support healthy life choices and offer therapeutic activities associated with gardening.  One of the long term tenants being a former combat veteran was one of the first tenants to move into the program, and the first to lead the community garden set up and upkeep.

The Housing and Community Development Network of NJ joined the tour to raise awareness of the Building a Thriving NJ campaign; the initiative aims to boost the state’s economy through investments that create more affordable homes, address homelessness prevention and services, revitalize neighborhoods, tackle foreclosures, and eliminate childhood lead poisoning by promoting safe homes and schools. http://www.hcdnnj.org/buildathrivingnj
