Access to safe, stable, and affordable housing is a fundamental necessity, yet recent executive actions threaten to make this even more difficult for those who need it most. As an organization dedicated to Care, Community, and Choice, Triple C Housing remains committed to expanding housing opportunities and ensuring vulnerable individuals and families have the support they need to thrive.
Recent policy changes, including the rollback of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives, hiring freezes at HUD, and weakened fair housing protections, could have devastating effects, such as:
- Reduced Fair Housing Protections – Rolling back DEIA efforts and rescinding protections for marginalized communities could limit access to housing for people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other vulnerable groups.
- Strained Housing Resources – A hiring freeze at HUD will prevent the agency from efficiently administering federal housing programs, delaying critical support for low-income households.
- Increased Housing Insecurity – Targeting sanctuary cities by restricting access to federal housing funds could leave immigrant families and mixed-status households without the resources they need to secure stable housing.
Marcus J. Kellam, Director of Community Engagement & Development at Triple C Housing, highlights the immediate consequences of these policy shifts:
“It is no secret that the vast majority of affordable housing development throughout the country is created with financial resources from both public and private sources. Any pause to these funding programs, grants and loans alike, means fewer opportunities for some of the most vulnerable members of our community to provide the basic necessities for their family.
Nonetheless, Triple C remains committed to working with our funders, public and private, and individual donors to fulfill our mission of creating permanent supportive housing opportunities coupled with innovative support services empowering individuals and families to live with dignity and fulfill their utmost potential.”
Kimberly Ewell, Chief Operating Officer (COO) at Triple C Housing, further underscores the human toll of these funding cuts:
“Denying our most vulnerable citizens access to critical funding needed for their basic human needs—such as safety, security, and health—is simply inhumane.
The impact of these cuts will be profound and long-lasting. Individuals with disabilities, the elderly, veterans, and children all rely on federal government support. These funding cuts threaten to eliminate vital services, including rental subsidies, health insurance, prescription coverage, food and nutrition programs, and access to primary education. As a result, we will see a rise in homelessness, higher mortality rates, and increased food insecurity.
This blanket approach is contradictory. Reducing support for vulnerable populations will only worsen their struggles, intensifying the very issues these programs are meant to address. The mental health consequences—stress, anxiety, and depression—are inevitable if these federal funding cuts go through. As these needs grow, organizations like Triple C Housing will be called upon to provide critical services. Our role will become even more crucial in the face of this growing crisis.”
Take Action
Now is the time to act. Triple C Housing urges community members, advocates, and policymakers to stand up for fair housing protections and ensure that essential resources remain available for those who need them most. Together, we can push back against these harmful policies and continue working toward a future where everyone has a place to call home.
